Marijuana

Should it be legal?  I am torn.  I don't think it is any worse than alcohol.  I drink but I do not smoke marijuana.  Not because it is illegal.  I have tried it years ago and did not like it at all.  The things I don't understand about it are that it is a schedule one narcotic.  Cocain and heroin are schedule two.  How does that make sense. 
They say that the Mexican Drug Cartels controll the majority of the marijuana trade.  Would that be the case if it were legal?  One of the arguments against is that it is a gateway drug.  I believe alcohol is a much bigger gateway drug. 
If it is not made wholly legal, I think that at the very least the fedral government should defer to the states.  It seems to be part of the problem that even those people who have a genuine need and the proper paperwork to use it, still have to hide there use.  Any time something is done that way it is going to increase the crime associated with it.
