There are people going without food. There are people going with basic medical or dental care. There are people not able to get jobs because there focus is on getting food and basic medical and/or dental care. I have been blessed with a place to live that is fairly secure no matter what my financial position is. But most people in my circumstances are not. Now the president (and the other canidates for president in varing amounts people to donate large sums to there campaigns) is asking high donars to donate the maximum of $75,800 to his re-election campaign. I voted for President Obama. And unless something amazing happens I will most likely vote for him again. Who ever I vote for, I will, in all likely hood, not be voting for them because they are the best. Instead I will be voting for the least bad canidate. Now, I wonder what would happen if, instead of asking all those people for $75,800 the President asked all those people for 50,000 or even 30,000. Then asked them to give the remain 25,800 to 45,800 to the charitable organization of there choice. To doctors and dentists and food banks and rental assistance programs that could get people secure enough that they could spend there time looking for work instead of food. Some would start small business such as auto repair, smog shops, secratarial services for the companies not yet ready to hire full time employees. Cleaning services for those companies that wanted there staffs to no loner have to empty the trash and clean the bathrooms. Affordable day care for those trying to go back to work who cannot because there is no affordable day care. Maybe my list is unrealistic, but these are things I am coming up with as I sit here typing. Imagine what healthy people could do if they could put some thought into it.
I don't believe welfare is the answer. I believe people helping people is the answer. And then there are the unions. No remeber, I am a Democrat. But in my town Whole Foods is trying to open a grocery store. However the union that represents the workers of Vons, Ralphs, Albertsons and any other union grocery stores is fighting it tooth and nail. So to me, if they stop Whole Foods from coming to town, what they have done is kept 50 to 100 or more people from going back to work. People who would be spending there money on rent and food and maybe even the occasional movie or Starbucks coffee. Would they be getting paid as much as they should or once would have gotten paid? Probably not. Would it be more than they are getting now? Probably. 100 years ago, I believe unions were absoulutly essential to the survival of working men and women. I think, however, that they got greedy. It became no longer about a fair and reasonable wage and working conditions but about how much those able to get union jobs could get for them selves. So instead of letting Whole Food and jobs to the area, there goal seems to be to make sure THEY get more. That THERE quality of life does not suffer.
I really do believe things have to change. Maybe we all have to give up a little before it gets better for EVERYONE. Change starts with each one of us. I am willing to try, how about you????
